DAY TRAINING ACTIVITY CENTER (DTAC)
Clients who are not yet ready, or may not ever be ready, to transition to one of our work programs participate in one of our DTAC programs. Here they learn independent living skills such as self-care, safety, health, personal hygiene and grooming, home skills, grocery shopping, cooking and lunch preparation, basic academic skills, money management and self-advocacy skills.
Community Integration Program
Twice each week, clients in our Community Integration program go out into the
community in order to both practice the skills they are learning in the
classroom setting as well as learn how to access community educational and
recreational opportunities.
Art Center
Clients in our Art Center learn to express themselves artistically through
drawing, painting, jewelry making, t-shirt decoration, ceramics, and numerous
other art projects. They enjoy the thrill, sense of self worth, and boost
to their self esteem from receiving a commission on the sale of their artwork --
from realizing that others enjoy and appreciate their artwork and actually want
to purchase something they individually created. We promote client artwork here
at New Horizons and at community art shows and other sales venues.
One component of this program that we are particularly proud of is our "Client's Corner" Newsletter, a bi-monthly publication that is written by clients for clients. The newsletter contains stories about our clients, their interests, personal experiences, and issues of concern.
The Brite Lites have been honored by former President Bush's Points of Light Foundation for serving as an outstanding example of a program that enables individuals with disabilities to reach beyond themselves and inspire the community.
Over the past nineteen years, the Brite Lites have given more than 200 performances and appeared on local television. They have performed at the opening ceremony for California Special Olympics and are preparing for their annual performance at the Los Angeles Fire Department's Holiday Toy Drive.
